AUSTIN — The United States is not the only country that has experienced a surge in international air travel.
Air travel has been increasing steadily for several decades, but the past year has seen a dramatic uptick in demand and growth in the number of travelers arriving by airplane.
According to the latest data from the Department of Transportation, travel has grown by 10% in the past five years, while international air traffic has grown 16% over the same period.
But the number and type of international travelers arriving at airports around the country have also grown rapidly, from 1.2 million international travelers in 2014 to 2.4 million in 2017.
Some of that growth has been driven by new arrivals from Asia and the Middle East, who are seeking to connect with American travelers and stay longer at the country’s airports.
“It’s really a global phenomenon, and that’s what’s really been driving the increase in international travel,” said David Miller, director of the International Aviation Association.
“In many cases, it’s the only way to get into America.”
The number of international passengers traveling to and from the United States increased more than threefold between 2014 and 2017.
A total of 2.2 billion international passengers were flying to and through the United Kingdom in 2016, according to figures from the British government, an increase of more than 20%.
International travelers account for about 13% of the U.S. population, according the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
That number is expected to increase to about 15% in 2022.
While the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain all saw a surge of international travel during the first half of this year, they are now the top three countries in the world that are adding the most foreign travelers.

There are also growing numbers of people seeking to travel between the United states and Canada and other countries.
According the Department for International Development, the United State added 3.4% more international travelers last year, an average of more 17,000 per day.
The United Kingdom is second with an average increase of about 7,000 international travelers per day, and India third with an increase rate of about 5,000 travelers per month.
International travel has also become an important component of international trade.
According a report from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, in 2017, international trade increased by 7.9%.
International tourism, which includes international visitors and those traveling on business, is the largest source of income for the United Sates economy.
In 2017, nearly $5.4 trillion was spent in the United United States on international travel, a 6.6% increase over the previous year, according U.N. data.
The U.s. government and private corporations have benefited as well.
A study by the Washington-based Economic Policy Institute estimated that between 2008 and 2018, the federal government lost $9.4 billion due to travel-related business expenses, such as travel and lodging.
The report found that “the cost of travel increased by 20% and the revenue by 9.2% over that period.”
Businesses have also benefited from the growth in international tourism.
According an analysis by the University of Texas at Austin’s Baker Institute, the number one industry for international visitors in 2017 was the insurance industry.
In 2018, travel-specific insurance accounts for about $8.5 billion in revenue.
The number one source of revenue for insurance is U. S. citizens traveling overseas.
The International Air Transport Association estimated that U. s. citizens visiting more than 1,000 countries and territories accounted for $6.9 billion of international air passenger spending in 2017 and $7.6 billion in 2018.
The organization estimates that more than $6 trillion will be spent by 2020 in the U of S. on international tourism, and more than half that will come from U. States citizens.
“We think the trend is really in the right direction,” Miller said.
“If we can sustain this level of demand, then it will really help us continue to develop our economy and continue to create new jobs.”
International travelers, and international business, are important to the economy of Texas, said Michael Lauer, executive director of Texans for a Healthy Economy, an economic development nonprofit based in Houston.
“The fact that it’s international tourism is also part of the economy here,” he said.
But there is a downside to the international influx.
“International travel creates some negative impacts,” said Lauer.
“There’s some people who are in the middle of the road.
They don’t get the benefits of the trade that comes with it, and they can be less efficient.
There’s some economic costs.”
According to Lauer’s analysis, about 3.5 million jobs have been created by international travelers since the beginning of the 21st century, and those jobs include jobs in restaurants, hotels,
