When You wish upon a star is a musical that uses the power of sound to tell the story of a person.
The band, formed in 1988 by the guitarist James Hetfield and drummer David Cairns, started with the intention of exploring themes of loneliness and self-doubt.
Hetfield says the song is about the idea of the need to escape that darkness.
“I’m thinking of a lot of people and how it can be so difficult for them to come out, even if they are trying to be brave, and to come to terms with it.”
To know that this darkness has always been there and has been a part of them, to feel like they are just a piece of dust in the universe and that there’s something more out there.””
It’s a really nice story to tell.
It’s one of those songs that we always felt we needed to tell.
“The band’s first record, The Last of the Young and the Beautiful, went platinum in 1985.
It was followed by the album The New Song in 1987 and The Long Goodbye in 1988.
They were nominated for a Grammy for best folk album in 1991.
In 1992, Hetfields first band, The Big Bad Wolf, disbanded, but the band came back with a new lineup, The Bad Wolf.
The group released their first album, The New World in 2003.
They recorded their fourth album, I’m Still Waiting for You, in 2009.
The group also collaborated with British singer/songwriter Kate Bush on her 2014 single ‘I’m Still Standing’ and produced a new album by the same name, released in 2015.
Hettfield and Cairn have also collaborated on the BBC show You’ll Never Walk Alone, and the song I Still Wait for You went on to become one of the biggest hits of the decade.
The album, which was recorded in Hetford’s studio and produced by Bush, also featured the work of singer and songwriter John Mayer.
